Week of September 17th
We have had another busy week in room 258! Did you hear about International Dot Day?! Ask your child how they made their mark at Ivy Hill on Friday, September 14th. Here is what we have planned for this week:
* We completed Reading MAP testing on Friday and will have our Math MAP test on Wednesday at 10:45am.
* We learned a lot about our Star Students Hannah and Penny. Thank you for bringing in all those pictures to share - you sure are busy girls. We can't wait to learn more about this week's Star Student Amey!
* In reading, we are working on our comprehension as we "think" our way through our stories and mark our path with post -its to remember what we have read. We put together our reading binders and are looking forward to filling in our classroom reading logs. Remember to record the number of minutes you read each night in your weekly homework reading log. Total the minutes and have your parents sign it to be returned each Monday. This month's genre is Realistic Fiction. How many realistic fiction books will you read this month?
* We are starting our Words Their Way spelling program this week. Each student will work with a group based on their spelling needs. There are 4 different groups with different lists in our classroom. It is not the goal to see how many words the children can memorize for a weekly test, it is the goal to teach them the spelling patterns in order to be able to become stronger spellers of all words.
* In Math we completed our Unit 1 test and the students were quite successful. We have started Unit 2 which will focus on numbers and organization. Throughout this unit we will examine different names for numbers, review the base ten place-value system, review procedures of addition and subtraction of multi - digit whole numbers, and reintroduce and extend ideas of data, collection, organization, display and analysis. KEEP PRACTICING THOSE ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS!
* We continue to discover properties of matter in Science. The students have been using the scientific method procedures to conduct experiments in finding the weight and volume of solids, liquids and gases. They discovered the idea of using displacement to measure the volume of solids. This week we will look at the density of the states of matter. True scientists now, they are even writing their own procedures. How was the peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
* What is in a name? The students are finding that out this week as they interview their families, search through baby name books and browse the internet to discover many interesting facts about their own names. All this research will lead to an exciting project to be shared at the October open house.
