Hopefully everyone survived the snow last week! The kids have another short week, since the teachers have meetings all day on Monday. We will get back to a regular schedule on Tuesday. Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Disha is our MVP this week!
* Our internet safety posters can be found on our classroom blog. Mrs. Polito did a lesson about things to do to make sure we are safe whenever we are working online. The kids used the program Comic Life to illustrate 4 pieces of advice. We hope you enjoy them.
* In reading we will continue the work with our small novel groups. The kids will practice with some reading/literature vocabulary words such as: metaphor, simile, plot, and theme. We will continue to practice test taking strategies and work on our long responses to literature using specific text to back up our opinions.
* In grammar we will continue to work with pronouns. This week our attention will be on pronoun/verb agreement in sentences.
* In writing the students will work with using quotations correctly and indenting. We will talk about inferring character traits from dialogue, and using strong verbs to show character traits. We finished the book, James and the Giant Peach, and we will continue to use excerpts from this book to help us discuss the main character, James.
* We will spend one more day reviewing long division in math this week. I cannot emphasize how important it is for students to practice their multiplication and division facts at home, as well as at school! This week we will work on interpreting remainders. We will also work with full-circle protractors and learn about rotations and angles.
* The kids did a great job with mixtures in science last week. This week the kids will use what they know about the properties of solids and liquids while working with a material called Whatzit. They will design experiments to help them determine if the mystery material is a solid or liquid. The kids will also work with physical and chemical changes. We will talk about the similarities and differences between the two. The kids will also use baking powder and vinegar to observe a chemical change.
