We are down to the last 2 days of January! The kids have a full week ahead of them, but we're all looking forward to celebrating at Fun Fair on Friday. Here is a look at our week ahead:
* The kids will have an Art Awareness lesson in our room on Monday morning. We're looking forward to learning from the parent volunteers that come in.
* In reading we will continue to practice with ISAT vocabulary. This week we will work with figurative language and some poetry. The kids will work in partners to review the long response organizer to help respond to fiction text. They will then complete a long response on their own. We will be meeting with our reading partners this week and continue to meet with our small novel groups as well. Lots of reading going on in our classroom!
* In writing, we will review showing evidence of a character trait. The kids will then begin a response to fiction essay. During this time the kids will write an essay that clearly focuses on one character trait and uses details from two moments in the book where the main character demonstrates the trait. Throughout the upcoming weeks, the kids will also revise their drafts by finding and adding more details from the text that show and support the trait they are writing about.
* We didn't get a chance to get to our grammar lessons last week, so we will continue with pronouns this week. The kids will practice pronoun/verb agreement.
* This week we will work with angles and rotations in math. The kids will work with both full and half circle protractors. We will review vocabulary such as: angle, ray, vertex, right, obtuse, and acute. We will also work with coordinate grids, as well as, latitude and longitude. It's imperative that the kids continue to practice their division skills! Next week we will begin long division with 2 divisors!
* We will review all that we've learned about physical and chemical changes in matter on Monday. The kids will take a final quiz over this material on Tuesday. We will then take a break from science for a bit and switch over to social studies. Our next unit in social studies covers reasons Europeans left for the New World. The kids will learn about exploration in the 15th and 16th century. They will go on an imaginary "excavation" to explore artifacts from a sunken ship that will give clues about the explorers' motives for travel. A short quiz will be given over this material on Friday. The study guide can be found on the History Alive link on our blog. The students should choose Lesson 4 for practice.
