Happy Earth Week! Hopefully everyone had a chance to dry out a bit over the weekend. Last week gave new meaning to the phrase "April showers". Yikes! We have another busy week ahead of us. Here is a look ahead:
* In order to help celebrate Earth Week the kids are encouraged to wear blue/green on Monday, walk to school on Wednesday, do a waste free lunch on Friday.
* The kids filled up their marble jar and voted to have a games lunch this Friday. The students are allowed to bring in electronic games or board games to play during this time.
* This week in grammar we will learn about linking verbs. The kids are recognizing that linking verbs are the equals sign between the subject of the sentence and the noun that is named in the predicate. We will work to recognize linking verbs and properly use them in a sentence.
* The kids created their characters last week in writing. This week we will work with creating a short fiction story. We will talk about the shape of a story, creating conflict, and recognizing rising actions. The kids will have a chance to experiment with strong verbs and adjectives to show the reader what is happening in the moments they write about.
* We finished up Unit 7 last week in math. This week we will continue to work our way through Unit 8. This week our focus will be on estimating and finding the area of shapes. We will learn formulas for the area of rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms.
* Last week in science the kids made their own river tables. This helped us see how water can erode surfaces and create changing river banks and deltas. This week we will look at how abrasion wears down rocks, and how glaciers carve the land.
* In reading we will continue to work on making inferences. The kids worked with using the text and pictures to infer unknown words. This week we will infer headings/subheadings, poetry, and learn how to draw conclusions from facts. We will read articles and infer to see if the tragedy of the Titanic could have been avoided.
