Hopefully May has started off well for everyone! I apologize for not updating the blog last week. Between our crazy schedule in class and meetings, it got past me. This week have another busy week ahead of us. It's a good thing that we have 5 days to help get everything in. Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the activities for Teacher Appreciation Week. The treats, breakfast, lunch, flowers, notes, yoga, and kids wearing my favorite colors/teams were wonderful. I truly appreciate all of your efforts and thanks!
*Sarah G was a great MVP last week and we can't wait to hear more about Aniya this week.
* The 5th graders are having a used book drive to help them finance their Camp Edwards trip. All grades will have a chance to visit the book drive and purchase books. We will be going on Tuesday. All books will be $1 or 50¢. Your child is welcome to purchase books, however, it is not required.
* Art Institute field trip forms went home with your child last week. Thank you to everyone who has already turned in money and the permission form. If you have not, please do this as soon as possible. Last call for permission forms in on May 10th!
* We will be putting in our last Scholastic book club order of year on May 16th. Since we do not have enough paper catalogs for everyone in our class, all catalogs can be found online. The kids are welcome to use their holiday coupons for a book that is $4 or less. Just follow the directions listed on the coupon itself when ordering online.
* This week in grammar the kids will work with comparing objects with the words "good" and "bad".
* The kids have worked to create two different characters and two different everyone situations. This week, the kids will decide on ONE character that they want to take all way through the writing process. We will be planning out the climax/turning point for this story, talking about how to correctly paragraph ideas, and continue working to put in strong verbs.
* This week we will finish up Unit 9 in math. The kids will take a practice test on Monday which can serve as a study guide. We will review in class on Tuesday and then take the final test on Wednesday. A parent note that explains our next unit will come home later in the week. The next unit will focus on Symmetry.
* Each child was given the new assignment for genre reading this month. May is pick your own genre month! The kids are required to read 2-3 books in a genre and then choose ONE to do a book talk on. This book talk will be done in front of the class after June 1st. A rubric and helpful tips for giving book talks is attached to the assignment that your child has.
* The kids will finish up their "how to make a successful colony" project this week in class during social studies time. We will then move on to learn about the northern, southern, and middle colonies. The kids will explore life in each and then use this information to compare and contrast the different regions.
