Happy Earth Week! Some of the kids participated in decorating the flower that was sent home last week. These will be hung up in the commons area for all to enjoy. We are finally back to a 5 day schedule--still lots to do, but at least one more day to complete things during the week. Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Rachel is our MVP of the week!
* We've had a lot of kids going to study hall during lunch time for missing assignments, late work, or organization. In order to help the kids get ready for 5th grade, we implemented the "no name, no paper" rule. This means that if anything is turned in without a name, your child will need to complete the assignment again in study hall, as the other assignment will just be recycled.
* In reading we will continue to work with drawing conclusions. The kids did a great job comparing their own thoughts to the author's last week. This week we will work with finding the main idea using inferential subheadings. We will also separate the main idea from supporting details.
* In grammar, the kids will work with adjectives that compare. Most of these adjectives end in -er or
-est.
* The kids will create believable problems for their characters they created in WEX. We will use these problems to help plan out the shape of their stories. This will be complete with rising actions and a climax. The creativity is flowing in our room--we can't wait for you to read our work! Once we are done planning the story for this character, the kids will have a chance to pick another character they would like to create!
* The kids received a study guide for electricity on Friday. This study guide is due on Tuesday. We will spend time in class reviewing everything we've learned about circuits, safety, conductors and insulators. The kids will have a test over this material on Wednesday. We will then switch gears to social studies, where we will learn about the early colonies of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth.
* We spent last week studying area in math. We will continue on that route Monday when we explore how to find the area of triangles. Believe or not, that will be our last lesson in this math unit! The kids will take a practice test on Tuesday (which will also serve as a study guide), we will have a whole class review on Wednesday, and then we will take our Unit 8 test over perimeter and area on Thursday next week. A parent note explaining our upcoming unit (Unit 9) will come home late next week. Our new unit will consist of more work with fractions, decimals, and percents!
*Just an FYI-- MAP testing will take place next week (beginning April 23rd). Mrs. Galazka's math class will take their math test on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Albrecht's math class will take their math test on Thursday morning. Everyone in our classroom will take their reading test on Friday afternoon. There is no way to study for these tests, so please just encourage your child to do his/her best. These tests will help show your child's growth throughout this year. Please do not stress about these tests! Your child will do great!
