It's a short week for the kids--they will have Friday off due to teacher trainings. We have lots to do and lots going on! Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Alexis is our MVP!
* Our Valentine's Day party is on Tuesday in the afternoon. Remember that if your child is choosing to pass out valentines in our class, they should be passed out to everyone. The kids will need either a bag or box to hold their goodies. Thank you to our room moms for getting everything ready for us--we're looking forward to a fun afternoon!
* We will continue studying figurative language and poetry this week in reading. We will also review different genres such as tall tales, legends, and myths. The kids continue to work on explaining their thoughts in writing with our reading responses. We are working to make meaningful connections to what we read and cite specific quotes from the text to back up our opinions.
* We finished Unit 6 in math and this week we will take break from Everyday Math to do some ISAT prep. The kids will take a practice ISAT test on Monday and then we will spend the rest of the week reviewing items such as perimeter, area, data (mean, median, mode), and our problem solving skills. Writing down both what we did to solve a problem and the reason we did it seems to be hard for this group. Don't be surprised to see some long responses come home for homework in weeks to come for extra practice. We will begin Unit 7 of our math program next week--our new unit will cover fractions and probability.
* The kids are typing up their response to literature essays. They are all revised and polished! We will experiment with some creative writing and also use some of our writing time to review key concepts in science. This extra science time will help the kids prepare for some ISAT topics that they need to brush up on.
* In social studies, we are working hard to find information about our explorer. Monday we will continue to use books, ipads, and lap tops to help us become experts on our explorer. The kids will then begin to pick which type of presentation they would like to do for the class. We will have the rest of this week and the beginning of next week to work on these. We will do our final presentations in class next week, so that the kids can learn from each other about the different explorers and their motives.
* The kids will review pronouns that are homophones this week. How often do we see "there, their, and they're" mixed up? Or even "your and you're"? We will work to identify and write the correct pronoun or word in sentences.
