We made it through our first week back from break. The kids did a great job of getting back into a regular routine. Now we have one full 5-day week before we get another long weekend. Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Andrew is our MVP
* In grammar, we will look at irregular verbs. Although the kids are used to adding on an "-ed" to verbs in order to make them past tense, it doesn't work for every verb.
* In reading, we are working on recording the most important details when reading nonfiction and fiction. The kids will practice with multiple nonfiction articles and historical fiction text. We will read, My Brother Martin, to honor the impact that Dr. Martin Luther King had on our country. The kids will also begin their new guided reading group novel and begin to work in reading partnerships.
* In math, we will spend Monday reviewing how to compare data that contains big numbers. Tuesday the kids will take a practice test over Unit 5, Wednesday we will review in class, and the kids will take a test over the material on Thursday. We will continue to work on problem solving throughout the week and begin explaining our thinking in a detailed, written explanation on Friday. A parent note about our upcoming unit will come home near the end of the week.
* The kids set up a container in the room filled with 100ml of water, to see how much water evaporates over the weekend. We will take a look at the change in water level (if any), and begin to compare/contrast data. Did the size of the container affect evaporation? Was the location in the room important? After analyzing data, the kids will set up one more experiment for evaporation--where they will change one variable in the previous experiment to help them draw conclusions about containers and locations. The kids will be taking a quiz over condensation and evaporation next week. If there is time this week, we will begin looking at mixtures.
* We continue to work with, James and the Giant Peach, during our writing time. The kids are getting more comfortable citing specific text to back up their opinions. This week we will continue to work on finding examples that SHOW a character's feelings and we will also study dialogue (how it can be used to show feelings and correct punctuation of dialogue).
* The Invention Convention is Friday! The classes will have a chance to view other students' work Friday afternoon. We're excited to see all the creativity! Good luck to all inventors who are registered to participate in the event! We're very proud of you!!!
