I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and Memorial Day! It is hard to come back to school after such a beautiful weekend. Summer is on the horizon- 2 more weeks to go! Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Friday is Field Day! The kids will have their field day activities during the morning. We will then cool off in the afternoon with the movie Frozen and some popsicles. I am planning on buying just plain juice popsicles for the kids. I will be sure that there is no dairy (lactose or casein) in them. If anyone would like to see ingredients, please let me know! The movie, Frozen, is also rated PG. If you would not like your child watching this movie, please let me know and we can switch things around!
* Book talks are due one week from today, June 2nd! The kids should have their books (if possible) and be prepared to share their presentations with us. I will show some sample book talks to the kids this week, however, if they use their handy planning sheet to help them prepare, they should be fine!
* Some of our small reading groups have finished their novels and are working on a new novel with a book club format. They are planning out their own reading assignment (number of pages to read), meeting date, and taking notes on important points in the chapters that they would like to discuss. We will spend other parts of our reading time working on summarizing information from both fiction and nonfiction text.
* In math, we begin Unit 10: Symmetry and Reflection. A parent note outlining this unit was sent home last week. This week we will work with reflective geo mirrors to experiment with shapes and symmetry. We will also work to find how many lines of symmetry certain shapes have. We will not get through this whole unit before the end of the year. However, we will do our best to get as many lessons and concepts in as possible!
* We will finish up our science unit this week with our overall test on Earth's Changing Surface. This test will most likely be Wednesday (if not, then Thursday is our back up!). The kids will receive a study guide covering the material we learned in our last science kit. Concepts such as water, wind, and ice erosion will be covered. We will also review the different parts of a river and rock abrasion. This will be the last grade that will be added to your child's overall science grade.
* We will take a short quiz over Chapter 6 in our History Alive unit on Tuesday. This quiz will be over what we learned about Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. We will then begin Chapter 7 on the early colonies. The kids will learn about colonies in the upper, middle, and southern regions of the east coast. They will be broken up into groups and will chose a colony to focus on. They will create a billboard advertising the positive things about their colony. The kids will then present their billboards to the rest of the class so that we can all learn about each colony.
* We are working on collecting information on both Mount St. Helen and Mount Kilauea. The kids will then be composing their own informative paper about these. One paragraph will describe the eruption of Mount St. Helen. One paragraph will describe the eruption of Mount Kilauea, and then they will have one paragraph which describes the differences between the two volcanoes.
* We are busy in-between assemblies, the talent show, and Field Day! The kids are scheduled to have their pool party at Frontier Pool on Tuesday, June 3rd. More information about this trip, as well as the permission slip will come home this week!
