Dare I say that we have a full week for once? Maybe the new month will be bring better weather for us. We can always wish, right? Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Midterms were sent home on Friday. Please look these over with your child, sign one copy, and return one copy to school by Friday, February 7th.
* Nick is our Star Student this week--we look forward to learning more about him!
* It's Red Ribbon Week! This year's Red Ribbon Theme is "A Healthy Me is Drug Free!". To help reinforce the theme here at school, PTA has coordinated the following activities for each day this week: Monday - wear RED, Tuesday- wear animal print or a shirt with an animal on it, Wednesday - crazy hair day, Thursday- wear your favorite sports team, and Friday - Ivy Hill spirit wear.
* Fun Fair is on Friday from 5:30-8:00! We hope to see everyone there!
* A new month brings a new reading genre challenge for the kids. February is going to be the Biography Blitz! The kids are expected to read at least one biography, however, more is always welcome! We will be doing a short project with the biography that your child chooses later in the month.
* This week we will practice the language technique of personification and alliteration! The kids had a blast with hyperboles last week!
* In grammar we will learn about linking verbs. Linking verbs are those verbs that do not show action. They "link" the subject of a the sentence with a feeling or description in the predicate.
* In writing we will begin to connect a character's feelings to a specific setting, use showing details to convey feelings, and connect a character's actions to how he/she feels. For example, can you tell the difference in how someone feels if they dance into a room or stomp into a room?
* We continue to work on long division in math. The kids will take a quiz over single digit divisors in class on Wednesday. We will use our long division skills to work with story problems. The kids will learn how to interpret remainders: do we use the remainder as part of the answer? Do we ignore the remainder? Does our remainder tell us to increase the number of groups we have? This will take a lot of thinking on your child's part. I always tell the kids…if it has to do with money or food, you can always find a way to split up the left overs!
* We are working with insulators and conductors this week in science. The kids will experiment with various materials to see which type of items help carry a current. We will also begin talking about electrical safety and the kids will finally have a chance to make their electromagnets!
* The "golden touch", "pandora's box", and "herculean strength". These are just a few of the allusions in Greek mythology that we have learned so far. This week we will learn how "odyssey" and "achille's heal" came to be.
