Last Week of 2013!

It's our last week before break.  Where has December gone?  We are busy, busy, busy this week. Here is a look at our week ahead:
*  Kassidy is our Star Student this week.  We are excited to learn more about her!
*  Our field trip to the Native American Museum is on Friday!  We will be back in time to eat lunch at school and then end our day with an all-school assembly!
*  Our class is on their way to fill up the marble jar.  If this happens, they will earn a movie and snack in the afternoon during science time on Thursday.  The kids can bring in blankets and an extra snack for the afternoon.  We will be watching a bit of Desipicable Me.
*  In reading we will take a short quiz over text structures on Monday.  We will then spend the remainder of the week working in small groups and analyzing different fantasy stories.  The kids will work to get into a routine of reading workshop where they will have a chance to read to self, practice research skills, work on vocabulary, and also finish up guided reading work.  We're excited to get the routine going!
* We are finishing up our final persuasive papers this week.  I am meeting with the kids as they finish up their sloppy copies and then they will revise and write their final drafts before break.  The debates over whether cursive should be taught in schools and whether a tomato is a fruit or vegetable are heating up!  The kids have some great reasons to back up their opinions from their research.
*  Our start to the science unit was pushed back until this week.  We will definitely start our static experiments this week though!  Lots of fun with static and balloons in our future here!
* We will finish up our Prezi presentations on our Native American tribes and then use the information to pick a region that we feel is the BEST region out of all of them.  The kids will use their power of persuasion to write a final paragraph evaluating this region.
*  In math we are taking a short quiz on multiplication on Monday.  This quiz is more for me to check up on how the kids are doing with this skill.  We will then move on to the new lessons of the unit about exponents (powers of 10) and rounding big numbers.  We will finish up this unit, review, and take our test the week that we get back from break in January.
* There will be no Weekly Folders going home this week since we have a 2 week break.  I don't want the kids to forget this over break.  We will start them up again the week we return.
* The kids will be expected to keep up their biblionasium and reading over the winter break.  Books are great to take with on trips or to cuddle under blankets with!
