Can anyone believe that Thanksgiving is only about one week away? This is our last full week of school before the students have next week off due to parent/teacher conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday. Mrs. Born and I are excited to meet with you to talk about your child's successes during the first trimester. We have lots to do before our break comes! Here is a look at the week ahead:
* Our class earned another marble party! We will have this on Friday. The class voted to have another fort party. The kids are invited to bring in blankets and pillows to help make the forts. Just a reminder that any items that the kids bring in must be carried by the kids themselves.
* If you would like to have reminders sent to your email or phone, please sign up for Remind 101. I will try to send out messages about tests, field trips, permission slips, etc.
* In reading this week we will talk about text features. Every piece of text is written in a specific structure to help the reader understand the information. We will work with nonfiction passages this week and review compare/contrast, cause/effect, and sequential organization. The kids are also working in their reading notebooks and practicing their reading responses in our guided reading groups.
* Our grammar lessons this week will cover plural nouns. We will practice this skill in the beginning of the week and take a short quiz over this near the end of the week.
* In writing, the kids are busy practicing their persuasive skills. Just a word of warning--YOU--are our target audience. The kids are using the techniques they learned about advertising and persuasion to write a letter asking you for something. I do have to admit, they have some great reasons! We will finish up this persuasive letter mid-week and move on to a new audience and topic after that.
* We are still working on our research project in the LMC. The kids have been researching their tribes and regions in partnerships. During the past few weeks, they have used their History Alive book and National Geographic Books. This week the kids will evaluate websites to find some valuable information that they can add to the facts they have collected so far.
* We are wrapping up Chapter 1 in our History Alive book. This chapter includes information about landforms and geographic features. The kids will get a study guide on this mid-week and we will take a quiz over this information on Friday. I will also be showing the students the History Alive online tutorial that can be used as a study tool.
* We will finish up the last lesson of Unit 4 in our math class this Monday. We will cover metric measurement and milliliters. Tuesday the kids will take a practice test over the material learned in unit 4 and Wednesday we will have a whole class review. Our unit 4 test will be in 2 parts this week. Thursday will be the main test over concepts; Friday the kids will be given a problem solver that will be answered in an extended response form.
* Thank you to all of the students and families for your support and patience during the beginning of this year. Thank you also to Mrs. Born for doing such a wonderful job getting the kids off to a great start this year! I hope you all have a wonderful start to the week and are staying dry.
