It's hard to believe that there are just three more weeks to go! Needless to say, our incredibly busy schedule in the classroom continues. Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Thank you to all who contributed to the JDRF walk-a-thon. The students raised over $6,000! A shoe with the name of each donator can be found on the wall in our commons area.
* Permission slips for our field trip to Camelot Pool are due by Wednesday, May 22nd!
* The kids have been working hard on their colony social studies project. Last week we finished up our notes and began making our billboards. This week we will view each others' billboards to learn about all of colonies. The kids will fill in information about government, climate/geography, jobs, and reason for being found.
* Monday we will erupt our volcanoes! We will use what we know about the different parts of a volcano and earth's moving plates to aide in our eruptions. The kids will then put together all that they have learned about erosion, abrasion, tectonic plates, and deposition to describe how some famous landforms have been formed.
* We finished up our last of the lessons in unit 9 of math last week. This week we will review for our test by taking a practice test and playing some review games. The long response problem solver will be given on Wednesday and the written test will be given on Thursday. We will begin unit 10 next week.
* The kids are putting together their stories about their everyday situations. This week we will talk about interesting beginnings and take-away endings. We will also revise our word choices and verb choices as well. The kids will be typing their final copies when we return from Memorial Day break.
* The kids were put in their book club groups last week. Each group will determine their own pace for reading the book as well as the questions and vocabulary that we discuss during our meetings. During our whole group lessons, the kids are learning to determine importance of both fiction and nonfiction text. When we read we can't possibly remember every isolated fact, nor should we. We need to focus on important information and merge it with what we already know to expand our understanding of the topic. We will learn how taking notes and becoming an active reader can help us with these skills.
