The first week of December flew by and this week will go even faster! Here is a look at our week ahead:
* Thank you to Anjali for being a great MVP! We look forward to learning more about Christina G this week!
* Students who turned in all of their homework during the month of November will enjoy a "bring your own electronics" lunch with Ms. Boston on Wednesday, December 12th. We have 17 kids going this month!!!
* Our class earned a marble jar party and we will celebrate in our pajamas. Mark your calendars for this Friday--pj day! The kids are welcome to wear slippers (in the classroom only) and bring a stuffed animal as well.
* We will finish up lessons on analyzing characters this week. The kids worked with finding multiple character traits last week and this week we will focus on comparing characters in stories to each other, discuss the roles of major/minor characters, and observe how characters change over time in a story.
* We continue to study the art of persuasion in writing. This week we will continue to think about topics from different perspectives, talk about targeting different audiences, and learn various advertising/persuasive techniques.
* In social studies, the students will finish up their websites on Monday. We will then review each others' websites to take notes on all regions that the Native Americans lived in. The kids will use these notes to help them role play about their tribe. The students will need to make a BIG decision for their tribe and respond to this in writing. The websites are listed in a page on the top of our blog. Please remember that until after Monday, they are still a work in progress!
* We experimented with static electricity last week. The kids learned what may cause static electricity and were able to witness the effects of it in class. This week we move to current electricity. The kids will work with wires, light bulbs, and batteries to learn more about electrical flow.
* We took the test over Unit 4 in math on Friday. The kids will take their long response problem solver on Monday and we will begin Unit 5 on Tuesday. A parent letter explaining our upcoming unit will come home with your child on Monday. Unit 5 deals with big numbers, estimation, and computation. This week we will cover extended multiplication facts, as well as estimating sums and products. It's extremely important that the kids continue to practice their math facts!!!! The kids will eventually learn partial products multiplication (this will be new for most--including parents!) and we will also focus on the traditional methods of multiplication. I cannot emphasize enough for you to have your child just "show what they know" on homework. This is a tremendous help to me as I look at homework to help plan out what we need to review for that day.
