We have another full and busy week ahead of us. 2 weeks to go until winter break! Here is a look at our week ahead:
* All field trip forms are due by Tuesday, December 6th! Please note that the cost for the field trip is $8.50 and not $7.50.
* Subha will be our MVP this week!
* The kids are enjoying James and Giant Peach so far. We have made our first impressions of James and practiced using examples from the text to back up our opinions. This week we will look at ways to describe nouns. The kids will look for examples of sensory details in the story. They will also practice describing actions with strong verbs and adjectives.
* In grammar, the kids will learn about past and future tense verbs. The kids will work to recognize the verbs, identify the tense of each verb, and also correct the verb tense (if necessary).
* Last week was the first week of Words Their Way for spelling and vocabulary. This week the kids will be given some different lists, based on their spelling inventory (which we took before Thanksgiving break). We will work to sort the words in various ways to learn the spelling patterns and sounds of the words. Most of the work for this week will be done in the classroom.
* We will spend Monday reviewing everything we have learned so far in Unit 4 of math. The kids were given a study guide/practice test on Friday, which we will go over in class together. We will take our test over the unit on Tuesday. A parent letter explaining Unit 5 will come home early this week. Unit 5 deals with Big Numbers, Estimation, and Computation. This week we will work with extended multiplication facts and the multiplication of multi-digit numbers.
* In reading we will focus on theme this week. The kids will work to pick out the theme of various fiction stories and genres. We will also practice inferring character traits based on a character's actions, and review how to use nonfiction text features with our Time for Kids magazine.
* We are on the final step of our UbD project with the Native Americans. The kids will be creating websites on which they will publish their own Choose Your Own Adventure Story about their tribe. The story will include background information about the tribe, a big event that causes the tribe to move locations, and the adaptations necessary to survive in their new environment.
* We did some experimenting with matter last week and the kids came up with their own definition of what matter is. This week we will explore the weight of solids and liquids, as well as, the volume of solids and liquids. We will use different measuring tools to help us get the correct measurements for our data. They are doing a great job being scientists!
