I hope you all had a fun long weekend. We're back to a normal 5 day week of school and thank goodness--we have A LOT to do!
* Danny is our MVP this week
* Report cards will come home on Friday--since this will give you lots of information about the trimester, there will be no Weekly Folders this week.
* If you haven't turned in your 3-2-1 pre-conference form, please return this before Friday. I will be using them to help me prepare your child's portfolio and conference.
* There will be no spelling this week!
* In grammar we will be reviewing plural nouns and possessive nouns. The kids will work to use context clues in a sentence to determine if the word is plural or possessive.
* We are working to finish up our personal narratives. The kids are using a revision checklist to help them through the revising process. We will begin a new genre of writing when we return from Thanksgiving Break.
* In math we will continue to work with decimals. The kids will practice estimating decimals, adding and subtracting decimals, and knowing the place value to the thousandths place. We will also take a look at metric measurement and how decimals play an important role in centimeters and meters.
* In reading we continue to work with making inferences. Inferences are when we take our background knowledge and add it to the clues we gain from reading the text. We are currently working with articles about the Titanic to answer one essential question: Could the tragedy of the Titanic been avoided? Talk to you child to find out what he/she thinks! The kids will also work with fiction stories and practice taking notes on details we find, to help us make inferences about characters or events. If time allows, we will practice using poetry and figurative language to make inferences.
* The kids spent time last week in the LMC learning about how to perform web searches and how to evaluate websites. They then found out the tribe they will be researching over the next couple of weeks. They will work next week with their group (or partner) to find information about their tribe's region, culture, shelter, food, resources, and advantages/disadvantages of their environment. We will then use this information to fill out a Google Doc and the next step of the project. Yes, the next step of the project is still a surprise for the kids!
* We are also working in the classroom and learning about the migration routes of the Native Americans. We will study how the Native Americans had to adapt to their surroundings and learn about some of the origin stories of the tribes. The kids will be taking a quiz over this information on Wednesday or Thursday. Study guides will go home early in the week with your child. The History Alive website is an awesome resource to help your child study at home!
