* Julia is our MVP of the Week--we look forward to learning more about her!
* This week is Everybody Counts Week! This program is designed to teach the children about various disabilities and how children with these challenges cope with them. It also helps children understand that they don't have to be the best at everything to still be worthwhile and important. The goal is understanding; to help create a climate in which we all feel at ease with one another's differences. Each grade will be presented with one disability or condition. Each presentation will provide the children with an opportunity to experience what it would be like to cope with a disability. 4th grade will learn about motor and orthopedic impairments. Thanks to our PTA and volunteers for their hard work to make this happen!
* Wednesday is National Walk to School Day! Meet some Ivy Hill teachers on the way to school as you walk your way to a great start to the day!
* There will be NO spelling this week. We have some special programs going on in the classroom, in addition to the shortened week. We will start up our spelling again next Tuesday!
* In grammar, we will review complex sentences and begin working with identifying run-on sentences. The kids will work to join run on sentences properly by putting the 2 ideas into separate sentences. Each sentence should have subject and predicate (verb).
* October begins a new genre study for the kids in reading. This month we will focus on mysteries. The kids will be required to read and report on at least 1 mystery during this month. They will be given a planner on Monday, which we will go over in class.
* This week in reading, we will learn about the mystery genre. The kids will learn about the key ingredients involved in a good mystery and also work with some vocabulary that pertains to the genre such as: alibi, suspect, sleuth, red herring, and evidence. The kids will keep track of different clues and events that happen in their detective case reports. We will practice our questioning skills and inferring skills this month as well!
* In writing, the kids continue to work with SHOWING in their writing. We will focus on showing the setting that our stories take place in. The kids will practice describing the senses around them to describe a place, rather than telling us the name. We will also work on describing nouns and using dialogue to describe moments as well.
* The kids will take their tests over Unit 2 in math on TUESDAY. They were given a practice test and organized their study links on Friday. We will review the practice test today in class and play review games to get us ready for tomorrow. A parent letter describing Unit 3 will come home with your child early in the week. Our next unit covers multiplication and division concepts.
* The volcano test is TODAY (Monday). The kids finished their plate tectonics songs last week, which helped them review the vocabulary and concepts that they needed to know for today. We will learn a bit about Mount St. Helens this week and take a look at some current issues with Time for Kids.
