* ART INSTITUTE FIELD TRIPS FORMS ARE DUE BY APRIL 12th if you are ordering a sack lunch from school. If you are NOT ordering a sack lunch, the permission slip is due by April 13th. Please remember that if you child is bringing a sack lunch that is needs to be a disposable bag and stapled shut so that things cannot fall out on the bus ride. Your child's name should be written clearly on the outside of the paper bag. The drink that your child brings needs to be completely unopened so that we don't have any spills before we even get to eating our lunches! ALL LUNCHES NEED TO BE PEANUT AND TREE NUT FREE!
* In reading, our theme this week is "Putting on a Play". The kids will be reading a play and practicing the skill of making judgments. We will also review antonyms and the steps to interviewing another person.
* Our spelling list this week follows a VC/V and V/CV pattern. Our focus will be on the vowel sounds in the first syllable of the word. The kids will take a pretest on Monday and will receive their spelling lists and activities which will be due on Friday.
* In grammar we will work with the articles: a, an, and the. The kids will learn the rules of when to use "a" vs. "an" and also practice using "the" to describe singular nouns.
* The kids will review fractions with games and review tests on Monday and take their Unit 7 test for math on Tuesday. We will begin our new unit on Wednesday. Unit 8 revolves around perimeter, area, and scale drawings. It begins with a review of perimeter and area concepts previously introduced and extends knowledge by developing formulas as math models for areas of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles. This week we will work with reviewing perimeter by using a scale drawing of our kitchens, creating scale drawings of the classroom, and finding the area of polygons. A parent letter explaining this unit will come home with your child on Tuesday.
* In writing, the kids are working to create a believable problem for their characters they have created. We will use what we know about the shape of a story to come up with a turning point for their characters to go through. We will also work to create their first even in the rising action portion of their plan.
*In social studies, we will study the colony of Plymouth. We will then review all 3 of the settlements we have learned about. The kids will receive a study guide of Chapter 6 on Tuesday and we will be taking our test over the material on Thursday. Friday we will begin Chapter 7 in our History Alive books which helps us compare the colonies.
